The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), a key regulator for the U.S. crypto industry, is grappling with a leadership exodus. Democrat Kristen Johnson announced her impending departure, joining three other commissioners who have already signaled their exits. This leaves incoming Chairman Brian Quintenz—former commissioner and nominee of President Donald Trump—potentially overseeing an empty agency.

Christy Goldsmith Romero, the current Democratic commissioner, plans to depart by month-end regardless of Quintenz’s confirmation status. Johnson stated she will exit "later this year," creating a possible interim period where the CFTC operates without its full leadership roster. The timing raises questions about continuity in crypto oversight during a critical phase of market maturation.
